Aluminum can crusher by ATE is a tool that can be used to compress aluminum cans up to 16 oz size, which means that the crusher will also work with smaller 12 oz cans. The tool has got a full steel body and crushing mechanism. ATE can crusher comes in a metallic gray color with a black handle. The design of the tool is not the most attractive and you will find similar looking products sold by few other companies, however from practical aspect this tool will do its job and crush aluminum cans.
The crusher has got a mounting holes on the body of the unit and needs to be installed to a wall or other vertical surface. The unit comes with all mounting screws needed to install the crusher. On the bottom of the tool you will find a bottle opener, which will be useful if you are drinking not only from aluminum cans but also from glass bottles. The crushing mechanism itself is pretty basic and consists of a crushing plate, rivets, hinges, handle with a soft grip padding. This soft grip padding is useful if you need to crush lots of aluminum cans at a time. We have seen other crushers without the soft padding, which are much less comfortable to use if you need to crush few tens of cans one by one. The tool will compress cans down to approx. 1-1.5 inch (2.5-4 cm) height.
Usage
The usage of the tool is pretty simple and crushing does not require a lot of force. To make the compression easier dent the sides of a can before crushing, this will also take a pressure off the crusher and provide a longer work life of the tool. If you find that the crushing mechanism does not slide properly, lube all moving parts properly before using the crusher. However, when the crushing mechanism has been lubricated, the handle probably won’t stay up, so you will need to think of some sort of workaround, if you want the handle to stay in an upright position. Another thing we found with this crusher is that it shoots a can out depending on the dimensions of the can and how correctly it’s aligned into the crusher. To avoid this dent the sides of a can a bit before inserting it into the crusher.
All in all, the tool is simple to use, but the construction of the crusher is quite flimsy, which does not give confidence that the tool will crush hundreds of cans without need of upgrading or fixing broken parts of the crusher.
